Soonchunhyang University Hospital Bucheon (Director Shin Eung-jin) announced that Professor Im Soo-bin of the Department of Neurosurgery at the hospital transferred the latest spine surgery techniques to Vietnam in August. Professor Im Soo-bin gave a lecture on the topic of 'Long-Term Effects of Minimally Invasive Transforaminal Lumbar Interbody Fusion (TLIF)' as a guest of Ho Chi Minh University Medical Center in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, and performed the surgery live for local patients.

'Transforaminal Lumbar Interbody Fusion (TLIF)' is a minimally invasive surgical method that removes damaged discs compressing nerves and inserts a cage to serve as a spacer and screws to provide support in the same location. Compared to fusion surgery using the conventional midline approach, this method offers significant advantages in terms of reduced pain and infection caused by muscle damage after surgery. The lecture and live demonstration received great response, with over 80 spine surgeons attending, not only from Ho Chi Minh City but also from nearby cities and as far as Hanoi in northern Vietnam.

Professor Im Soo-bin stated, "The patient who underwent surgery this time had suffered from lumbar stenosis for several years but hesitated to undergo surgery due to being 78 years old. However, as her recent buttock pain worsened and she became unable to move, she decided to undergo surgery." He added, "This patient experienced a significant reduction in back pain that she had been suffering from for years and an improvement in leg muscle weakness symptoms the day after the surgery and was greatly satisfied." He gained more trust by visiting the patient again the next day after the surgery to confirm her improvement and walking.

In addition, Professor Im Soo-bin received the 'Wiltse Academic Award' at the 'Neuro Spine Congress 2023,' the international academic conference of the Korean Spinal Neurosurgery Society held from September 21 to 23. He received the honor for his research on the 'Effect of Spiral 3D-Printed Titanium Cage Designed for Rabbit Cervical Defect Treatment.'

Professor Im Soo-bin expressed his gratitude for receiving the 'Wiltse Academic Award' and stated, "Through this research, we have found that the spiral titanium cage transplantation group has superior healing and bone fusion effects compared to the conventional titanium cage. In the future, we will work to improve the quality of life for patients suffering from spinal diseases through additional research."

Professor Im Soo-bin of the Department of Neurosurgery at Soonchunhyang University Hospital Bucheon has not only contributed to the medical development of overseas countries in need of medical technological advancement, such as Indonesia and Malaysia, by conducting live demonstrations abroad but has also contributed to the development of the field of spinal diseases domestically and internationally through continuous research activities.
